Ready for Medicare Visit? Here’s How To Prepare

Medicare Wellness Visit is a once-a-year benefit that includes preventative health care. Wellness care is medical attention that aims to reduce the risk of sickness or damage. Wellness Visit belongs to Part B of Medicare pays. You will be given a visit, once every 12 months. The visit itself is free of charge. However, if your doctor suggests or performs extra treatments during your appointment, you may pay additional fees.

A wellness visit isn’t simply for addressing health issues that you’re already aware of. It’s also an opportunity to collaborate with your healthcare provider, whether a doctor, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, and other staff, to identify health risks and establish a strategy to mitigate them. In addition, the wellness visit differs from an annual physical exam in that it allows you to have a conversation with your clinician for an extended period.

What happens during a wellness visit?

The doctor, nurse, or the staff will ask you to complete a “health risk assessment” questionnaire beforehand. Then, during your appointment, the doctor or nurse will:
  • Take your height and weight measurements.
  • Take your blood pressure reading.
  • Inquire about your medical and family background.
  • Inquire about any other physicians you’ve seen and any medications you’re taking.
  • Give you tips on how to avoid sickness, enhance your health, and remain healthy.
  • Make a list of your current providers and drugs, or update your existing list.
  • Complete a depression and memory and thinking screening to see if you have any issues.
  • Examine your physical capabilities and any potential hazards.
  • Make a list of your risk factors and treatment choices.
  • Provide you with a schedule for any additional preventative treatments and screenings that may be needed.

What to Bring to Your Wellness Consultation

The more prepared and structured you are, the more time you and your doctor will have to talk about your health issues. To bring with you to your appointment, it’s a good idea to assemble the following:
  • All medication you take (prescription, non-prescription, vitamins, supplements, and herbal) should be packed in a bag and taken with you.
  • A record of all the healthcare professionals you encounter, complete with names and contact information
  • Your completed health history form and a health risk assessment

A Wellness Visit is not intended to address new or current health issues. You are free to inquire about any difficulties you are having, but there may be a fee if handled during the appointment. If you want extra assistance, you may need to arrange a second visit.
